About Microcomputer Systems, Inc.

Microcomputer Systems, Inc., located in Baton Rouge, LA, was established in 1976 for the design and fabrication of state-of-the-art industrial instrumentation systems. The personnel of our company are highly trained individuals who specialize in hardware and software design, and in the fabrication of microcomputer networks. Our engineering personnel are well qualified having degrees ranging from the B.S.E.E. to the Ph.D. with years of practical experience in the industrial environment. Our people have been intimately involved in board level microcomputer design since the introduction of the microprocessor into the marketplace in the early 1970's. Notable works include renovation of the scoreboard and pylon systems of the New Orleans Superdome, design and manufacture of Auto/Manual Back-up Controllers used by Exxon/Esso in their worldwide refining operations, and the Lock, Dam instrumentation for navigation control on the Red River and analog and digital I/O cards for NASA's Jet Propulsion Labs Mar’s Rovers and numerous avionics systems for several leading avionics manufacturers.

Our custom designs for clients range from multi-processor cards (e.g., nine MC68HC811E microcontrollers on an inter-module bus) to special I/O cards, both digital and analog. MSI-6354 PC/104 CPU Card with VGA - The MSI-6354 PC/104 CPU Card (powered by a DM&P 800MHz Vortex86DX processor) offers a high performance, cost-effective, energy efficient (2W) and fully static 32-bit x86 processor which includes a XGI Volari Z9s 2D graphics controller that provides VGA resolutions up to 1280x1024,16 M colors. Analog I/O Cards

MSI-P412 Multi-channel 12-Bit Analog Input Card - a low-cost, high performance 12-bit analog input card with 1/2 LSB linearity. Four models provide 8, 16, 24 or 32 channels that operate from +5V. Programmable input ranges are 0-5V, 0-10V, -5V to +5V and -10V to 10V with inputs protected to 16.5V. Low span and offset errors result in no adjustments being required. Conversion time of 12 us provide rates up to 332 ksps for a 32-channel unit. Interrupt processing for IRQ4 thru IRQ9. Two programmable power down modes. Operates from -25° to 85°C.

MSI-P414 Analog Input Card - a low cost, high performance 12-bit analog input card with 1/2 LSB linearity and 1 MegOhm input impedance. Two models provide 8 or 16 channels that operate from +5V only. MSI-P415 Differential Input Analog Card - a low cost, high performance 12-bit differential input analog card with 1/2 LSB linearity and 1 MegOhm input impedance. Two models provide 8 or 16 channels that operate from +5V only. Software programmable input ranges are 0-5V, 0-10V, -5V/+5V and -10V/+10V. Low voltage input ranges are also available for 0-100 mV, 0-200 mV, -100mV/+100mV and -200mV/+200mV. Low span and offset errors result in no adjustments being required for these functions. Conversion time of 12 us provide rates up to 166 ksps for a 16-channel unit. Interrupt processing is provided for IRQ4 thru IRQ9. Two programmable power down modes. Operates from -25° to 85°C.

MSI-P416 Isolated 16-bit Analog Input Card - a 2-channel isolated 16-bit analog input card designed specifically for measuring analog signals in harsh electrical environments in all PC/104 embedded systems. The unit is particularly useful in low frequency measurement applications requiring a high resolution such as those encountered in battery charging, RTU, SCADA, and industrial monitoring and control applications. Commonly encountered ground loop currents and large common-mode voltages associated with analog data acquisition are eliminated by onboard circuitry. Jumper selectable input ranges are 0-50 mV, 0-5V, 0-10V, -50 to +50 mV, -5 to +5V, -10 to +10V, and 0-20 mA. The mA range has an isolated 20 mA source for exciting tranducer transmitters. An isolation voltage of 750V is provided for input-to-input and input-to-bus with surge suppression at each input of 100V. The card operates from +5V @ 200 mA. Operates from -25°C to 85°C.

MSI-P460 PC/104 Analog Output Card - an 8-bit analog output card with 4 models for either 8, 16, 24 or 32 output channels. Output ranges are jumper selectable for 0-5V or 0-10V. A single potentiometer adjustment provides spans of 4 to 6V or 8 to 10V for the two output ranges. Nonlinearity and relative accuracy are ±1 LSB with a settling time of 5 us and a slew rate of 2 V/us. Onboard buffer amplifiers provide output currents of ±10 mA. Operates -25°C to 85°C. Requires +5V and ±12V.


Digital, Serial & Timer I/O Cards

MSI-AX10420 PC/104 48-Line Digital I/O Card - provides 48 TTL level input/output lines arranged in two 24-bit digital I/O groups. Each emulates a 8255 PPI with a higher drive capacity. I/O by two 50-pin connectors that are OPTO-22 compatible.

MSI-AX10450 PC/104 Opto-Isolated Input Card - a 16-channel opto-isolated digital input card for monitoring 16 inputs in applications such as industrial ON/OFF status, limit switch monitoring and valve/solenoid OPEN/CLOSE status. Interrupt capability is provided on the first channel. The input range is from 5V to 24V with an isolation voltage of 1000 Vrms. Inputs via a 50-pin connector. Requires +5V only.

MSI-AX10455 PC/104 Relay Output Card - an 8-channel relay card designed for industrial control type applications. The relays are SPDT which can be set or reset directly by I/O write instructions. Each relay is rated at 1.5A @ 125 VAC or VDC. The NO, NC and Common contacts of each relay are provided by a 50-pin connector. A LED, adjacent to each relay, gives indication of relay state. Breakdown voltages from coil-to-contact and contact-to-contact are1500 Vrms and 1000 Vrms, respectively. Requires +5V and +12V.

MSI-NC911 PC/104 Digital I/O and Counter/TimerCard - a general purpose PC/104 I/O card which provides 24 parallel TTL I/O lines using a 82C55A-Type PPI (programmable peripheral interface) with a high sink/source current of 24mA. Digital I/O is via a 50-pin connector that is Opto-22 compatible. Three 16-bit counter/timer channels are implemented using a 82C54 interval timer. A 20-pin connector provides for counter or timer I/O. The unit is an 8-bit stackthrough PC/104 with I/O mapped 16-bit addressing for which addresses and interrupt options are jumper selectable. Requires +5V only.

MSI-P560 96-Line Digital I/O Card - provides 96 TTL level input/output lines arranged in four 24-bit digital I/O groups. Each group emulates a 8255 PPI (programmable peripheral interface) operating in mode 0. Each group is divided into three 8-bit ports ports A, B and C. Ports A and B can be configured as 8-bit input or output. Port C can be configured in two groups of four as input or output. I/O is provided by two 50-pin connectors. The unit is an 8-bit stackthrough PC/104 with I/O mapped 16-bit addressing for which addresses A5 thru A15 are jumper selectable. Operates -25°C to 85°C. Requires +5V only.

MSI-P563 PC/104 Universal Input/Output Card - a general purpose PC/104 I/O card which provides 24 parallel TTL I/O lines using a 82C55A PPI (programmable peripheral interface) with a 50-pin connector that is Opto-22 compatible. A serial port selectable as a RS-232C, RS-422 or RS-485 is provided by a 16550 PC compatible UART. Three 16-bit counter/timer channels are implemented using a 82C54 interval timer. Requires +5V only. Operates -25°C to 85°C.

MSI-DMP1800 PC/104 4-Port RS-232C Card - a 4-port serial I/O card with four full duplex RS-232C serial ports using 16550 UARTS. I/O addressing from 100 to 3C0 hexadecimal. Interrupts are selectable for IRQ 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7. Includes cables. +5V only.


Global Positioning System (GPS) Cards

MSI-P602 PC/104 Trimble Lassen iQ GPS Card with Digital I/O - a low cost, high performance global positioning system which uses the Trimble Lassen iQ module. It provides 12-channel GPS functionality that is fully compatible with Trimble’s popular Lassen SQ module using Trimble’s FirstGPS® architecture which delivers complete position, velocity and time (PVT) solutions for the host application. It features two GPS signal sensitivity modes: Standard and Enhanced. With Enhanced mode enabled, the module automatically switches to higher sensitivity when satellite signals are weak. The module also supports TSIP download of critical startup information for fast acquisition. This aided GPS (A-GPS) startup provides hot start performance for each power-up. The module supports the four most popular protocols: DGPS (RTCM), TSIP (Trimble Standard Interface Protocol), TAIP (Trimble ASCII Interface Protocol) and NMEA 0183 with an MTBF (mean time between failures) figure of 60 years. The card provides two serial ports for processing the GPS data. The primary port gives TSIP input and output data at a default BAUD rate of 9600. This port is also selectable for the TAIP protocol. The secondary port provides DGPS (RTCM) input and NMEA output at a default BAUD rate of 4800. Software selectable NMEA protocols using the secondary serial port are GGA (default), GLL, GSA, GSV, RMC, VTG (default) and ZDA. Baud rates are selectable from 2400 to 38,400. The DGPS protocol is RTCM SC-104. The serial ports are standard IBM PC compatible UARTs. Similarly, the secondary port is selectable at COM2, COM4 or an offset address. A time mark of 1 PPS is available as an interrupt or as input into modem status line DCD of the secondary UART for synchronizing events. The primary UART interrupt is also provided for allowing interrupt processing of GPS data. Interrupts are jumper selectable for IRQ3 thru IRQ7 and IRQ9. Four TTL level digital inputs are provided by status lines CTS and DSR of the primary and secondary UARTs. Four TTL level outputs are provided by OUT1 and OUT2 of these UARTs. The card is supplied with an active antenna having a 5 meter (16.5 ft.) cable and a spacer kit. A sample test program is supplied that illustrates programming of the UARTs for various NEMA protocols and data transfer rates. Operates from -40° to 85° C.


Networking Cards

MSI-NC811 PC/104 Network Card - an inexpensive 16-bit Ethernet PC/104 Module which offers users the highest performance in Full-Duplex architecture. It is a plug & play + jumperless + Full-Duplex Ethernet card that uses enhanced drivers provided for LAN cards, as well as Novell NE2000 drivers. Furthermore, by using a single Ethernet chipset, this card consumes only 10% of the power of a typical Ethernet card satisfying your computer’s “Energy Star Logo” requirement. The card uses a RJ-45 connector and allows users to configure the hardware by using software, or Plug & Play mode with the auto-setup feature that makes the card truly “Plug & Play“.

PC/104 Position Transducer Interface Cards

MSI-P402 PC/104 32-Bit Quadrature Decoder/Counter Card - a 32-bit quadrature decoder/counter card designed for monitoring quadrature encoder inputs used in determining motor shaft positions and rotations in machine control and robotic applications. The card can be supplied with 2, 4, 6 or 8 channels. Each channel provides a 32-bit binary up/down counter with selectable 1X, 2X or 4X decoding and latched count outputs using Agilent HCTL-2032 decoders. For each input channel, connector J1 provides quadrature inputs with 10K pull-ups and surge suppressors for operation in harsh environments as well as +5V and ground for powering of user's encoders. Interrupts selection for IRQ3 thru IRQ9 are jumper selectable for managing counter roll-overs, if required. The unit is an 8-bit stackthrough PC/104 with I/O mapped 16-bit addressing for which the card base address is jumper selectable. A count reset to zero is provided for each individual channel. Operates from -40°C to +85°C. Requires +5V.

MSI-P404 PC/104 32-Bit Quadrature Decoder/Counter Card with Index Inputs - a 32-bit quadrature decoder/counter card with index inputs designed for monitoring encoder inputs used in determining motor shaft positions and rotations in machine control and robotic applications. The card can be supplied with 2, 4, 6 or 8 channels. The card can be supplied with 2 or 4 channels. Each channel provides a 32-bit binary up/down counter with selectable 1X, 2X or 4X decoding and latched count outputs using Agilent HCTL-2032 decoders. Four connectors (J1-J4)  provide differential quadrature inputs for operation in harsh environments as well as +5V and ground for powering of user's encoders. A shield ground is also provided for each input cable that is capacitively coupled to the PC/104 Bus ground. Each index channnel can be indivdually disabled. Interrupt selection for IRQ3 thru IRQ7 and IRQ9 are jumper selectable for managing counter roll-overs, if required. The unit is an 16-bit stackthrough PC/104 with I/O mapped 16-bit addressing for which the card base address is jumper selectable. A counter reset to zero is provided for each individual channel.  Operates from -40°C to +85°C.  Requires +5V only.
Power Supply Cards

MSI-NC0070 AC/DC Power Supply Card - provides +5V @ 2A, -5V @ 0.2A, +12V @ 1A and -12V @ 0.3A via the PC/104 bus from a PC/104 form factor card. The input voltage range is 90-264 VAC @ 47-63Hz. The unit provides an excellent supply for PC/104 systems. Built-in line filter. Meets FCC, CE, TUV, UL 478 and CSA 22.2 certifications. Operates 0°C to 55°C.

MSI-NC0072 DC/DC Power Supply and 24-Bit Digital I/O Card - provides +5V @ 3A to the PC/104 bus and to an onboard 2-terminal strip for external connections. The input voltage range is +8VDC to +48VDC. Overload and Overheat protection are provided. The unit also provides 24 digital I/O lines via a 50-pin connector that is OPTO-22 compatible. The digital I/O ports emulate a 8255 PPI in mode 0. Operates from -20°C to 60°C.


Prototyping Cards

MSI-P900 I/O Prototyping Card - an 8-bit I/O mapped prototyping card for simple rapid design implementation. Provides a fully decoded bi-directional 8-bit data bus (D0-D8), five low-enable selects (CS0-CS4) from jumper selectable addresses A4 thru A15. Also provides jumper selectable IOR*, IOW*, SA0-SA3, IRQ3 thru IRQ9, +5V, -5V, -12V, and +12V. Sixty percent of the card accommodates wire-wrap 8-pin thru 40-pin DIPs, SIPs, and up to 40-pin 0.1" spacing I/O connectors. Solder pads are provided on the bottom surface for easy connections of devices to +5V and ground.


Thermocouple Cards

MSI-P440 PC/104 Thermocouple (Temperature) Input Card - a low cost, high performance 8 channel thermocouple and 8 channel 12-bit analog input card. MSI-P442 PC/104 Thermocouple Input and Analog I/O Card - a low cost, high performance 12 channel thermocouple, 4 channel 12-bit analog input and 1 channel 12-bit analog output card. Analog Devices AD597 (-200 to 1000°C, K type) thermocouple conditioners provide ice point compensation and 10mV/°C proportional operation. Two Maxim MAX197 8-channel analog converters provide programmable ranges of 0-5V, ±5V, 0-10V, and ±10V with 12 us conversion times for processing the thermocouple and analog inputs. VGA Cards

MSI-PM1033 PC/104 LCD/VGA Card w/DiskOnChip Flash Disk Socket - a high performance LCD or VGA display and a socket for M-System's DiskOnChip for 2 MB up to 144 MB of flash disk. LCD and VGA display can be simultaneous. The card employs a TP6508IQ chipset and 1 MB of onboard VRAM. CRT monitor resolutions are selectable for up to 1024x768 for 256 colors. LCD resolutions are up to 800x600 for 16M colors. Supports TFT and DSTN LCD panels for 18/24-bit data signals. Provides +/-40V Vee for flat panel requirement. Wireless Cards

MSI-P710 PC/104 ZigBee Wireless Card with Analog In and Digital I/O
- a low cost, high performance wireless card providing the ZigBee protocol using a XBee ZB or XBee-PRO ZB modules operating at an rf frequency of 2.4 GHz. With advanced mesh networking functionality, XBee and XBee-PRO ZB modules improve data traffic management and allow for greater node density. The card is configurable for Transparent or API operation. Uses simple AT commands with a standard COM port provided by an onboard UART. The card can function as a Coordinator, a  Router or an End Device in the ZigBee mesh topology.

A 16C550 UART interfaces the XBee module to the PC/104 bus. The UART provides a 16 byte transmit and receive FIFO and baud rates are programmable from 1200 to 115,200 bits/s. Automatic hardware RTS and CTS flow control is used to prevent overflow of the local receiver and remote receiver FIFOs. The card I/O address is jumper selectable for COM1 thru COM4 with an optional 16-bit offset address. Ten interrupts are jumper selectable for ranges contained in IRQ2 thru IRQ15. The ZigBee I/O provides 4 lines of analog inputs individually selectable for 0-5V, 0-10V or 0-20mA with 10-bit resolution, and 5 TTL selectable as input or output.  A fused 5V@0.5A is provided on the I/O connector is available for powering analog and digital sensors connected to the card. All I/O lines have varistor surge  suppressors for transient voltage (lightning, etc.) protection.

The antenna connection to the card is provided by a SMA bulkhead connector. A 6" cable attaches this connector to the rf module which permits its removal from the card bracket for mounting into the user enclosure as an option. A sample BASIC test program is supplied that illustrates programming of the card for various XBee PRO commands. A BASIC interpreter for running this program is available at no charge.

Operates from -40° to 85° C and requires only +5V.
