Luterbach/Switzerland-based DIGITAL-LOGIC presents with the MSM855 the first Pentium M computer board in PC/104plus format. The compact module uses the just recently developed smartModule855 Pentium M processor with clock rates of 0.6 GHz to 1.6 GHz. Equipped with a
1-Mbyte L2 cache the 1.6 GHz Pentium M shows a capability comparable with a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 processor. The PC/104plus computer is based on the Intel 855GME chip set with 400 MHz front side bus and provides all standard PC interfaces such as COM1/2, LPT1, a floppy interface, an IrDA interface, and two PS/2 ports for mouse and keyboard. There are up to 1024 Mbyte of DDR RAM as main memory on the module available. CPU and memory are mounted exchangeable, but mechanically protected against vibrations and shocks.
The standard version further includes six USB-V2.0- (Universal Serial Bus) ports, an AC97 V2.3 compatible sound interface, a 100/10-Base-T port (RJ45), and interfaces for a CompactFlash card and an IDE hard disk. In addition, all necessary power supplies and a PIC 17C871 controller for advanced ACPI power management functions are integrated. For multimedia applications, the PC/104plus board provides a real 5.1 sound system with six output channels and two input channels. The MSM855 uses the "Extreme Graphic“ video controller, which is integrated in the Intel-855GME chip set, and supports Direct-X9 compatibility with a video memory of up to 64 Mbyte. The video controller has two different video outputs, VGA-Analog and DVO/LVDS, to control two different monitors.
As all power saving functions of the Intel-855GME chip set are supported, the MSM855 only consumes between 6 watt and 24 watt (depending on the performances from 600 MHz to 1600 MHz). The smartDesign ensures the thermal connection so that the computer module can be integrated optimally in the housing of the application. The MSM855 may be expanded by the PC/104plus PCI bus.
The Pentium M computer board is supplied by a voltage of 5V and runs under Windows? CE/98/2000/NT4, Linux, QNX?, and RTXDOS?. Equipped with a new 1-Mbyte Flash BIOS the board allows to boot the operating system from different media such as hard disk, floppy disk, USB, IEEE 1394, PC Card, or LAN. The module operates at a standard temperature range of
–20°C to +50°C. On request, the product is also available for an extended temperature range of
–20°C to +85°C. The MSM855 is tested for shock and vibration, and is ideally suited for applications in the areas of navigation, telecommunications, computer periphery, medical and measurement technologies, the aerospace industry, automotive electronics, and in internet terminals.
