Eugene, OR — VersaLogic Corporation today announced a new line of low-cost I/O expansion boards called Serial Peripheral eXpansion ™ (SPX ™ ) modules. The SPX format provides designers with an easy-to-implement I/O expansion platform for both standard and custom functions. The SPX format uses a proprietary implementation of the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) Bus that operates at high speed on a simple 14-pin interconnect cable. VersaLogic's latest EBX platform, the Python, includes an SPX interface, and additional SPX-enabled base boards are nearing release. Initial SPX offerings include an 8-Channel Analog Input module, CANbus controller, 4-Channel Analog Output module, TTL I/O port expansion, and an 8-Channel Solid State Switch. The company has plans to develop additional off-the-shelf modules as well. The SPX format also easily accommodates custom requirements and custom designed SPX modules will be made available through VersaLogic's Research & Development group. Up to 4 SPX modules, of identical or different functionality, can be used per system. They can be bolted to the host board, or located up to 2 feet away.

”Invariably the on-board I/O features of a given Single Board Computer do not exactly meet the user's needs,” said Len Crane, president of VersaLogic Corporation. “The ability to economically add the last 5 or 10% of the needed functionality will become more important as OEMs look to contain rising design and manufacturing costs. The SPX interface offers savings in terms of both cost and real estate, compared to traditional ISA-based devices. These advantages come without a reduction in throughput or capability,” continued Crane.

All SPX modules are RoHS compliant and are designed for extended temperature operation (-40°C to +85°C). As with other VersaLogic embedded computer products, SPX modules are designed for long-term reliability and availability. Standard SPX modules are priced starting at $60 each and volume discounted OEM pricing is available. Pricing for custom module development is also available upon request.
